My Students

Could you imagine functioning in today's world without being able to read? Did you know that the majority of children with significant reading delays at the end of 1st grade never catch up?

As a reading specialist, I work with students who struggle with learning to read and spell.

Since my children are identified early, in grades k-2, they have a better chance to overcome their reading difficulties and become successful students. The population I work with is diverse economically as well as ethnically.

My Project

Since my students have already begun to struggle with early reading skills, they respond best to hands-on, motivational activities. The various games and materials will help them learn how to blend sounds to decode and spell words. One such game is called "W-I-N-G-O" in which children spin a spinner to select a color and choose a matching domino. They try to form a word by matching letters on their domino to the letters on their card. Another game for beginners is entitled "Alphabet Soup". It includes a set of 26 soup cans with 7 object cards to sort into the cans. My youngest students will also enjoy playing with "Phonics Bean Bags". Each of the 26 bags contains an embroidered picture representing the sound. My more advanced beginners will benefit from using the "Phonics Cube Classroom Set" in which they roll cubes and form words with the letters and word families.

Obtaining materials that are engaging will allow my students a chance at success.

Children who struggle quickly become passive learners. Creating opportunities for students to become actively involved in the learning process will lead to success that could change their lives.
