This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school has some students who have set themselves a challenge for next year. They will be delving into the world of Spanish literature by reading from a list of outstanding novels-and we're not talking about translations!

We are a high school of approximately 1700 students who represent a wide range of racial, ethnic, social, and economic backgrounds.

A high percentage of these young people pursue higher education after graduation. We encourage our students to challenge themselves academically, such as by taking Advanced Placement courses and applying for credit at one of our state's top universities.

My Project

Among the AP courses we offer is Spanish. In this course, the students read works of major Spanish authors-Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Ana Maria Matute, Miguel de Unamuno, and Jose Camilo Cela-in the original language, and engage in critical study and discussion. They also examine the lives of these authors and the historical events, such as the Spanish Civil War, that affected their work. My school's library media center owns one or two of the required texts, but the AP Spanish teacher and I would like to offer a wider range of materials to next year's class.

These authors are hard enough to understand in English translation.

Unamuno, for example, has been compared to Dostoevsky. Yet these students have challenged themselves to read and discuss these novels, novellas, and short stories in the language in which they were written, the way the authors intended them to be read. Such an endeavor will have a profound effect on both the students' grasp of another language, but also on their critical reading of English texts.
