My Students: Autistic students use visual clues and concrete examples to learn self-help, academic content, socialization, and safety skills. They need a visual "picture" to understand the oral requests being made.

Students are kindergarten to fifth grade. Rural, high poverty area in East Tennessee with limited community involvement. School is a very well known, and respected elementary. This school feeds into another middle school and our students usually perform in the top ten of each graduation class.

My Project: Digital camera is intended to be used to photograph students going through normal activities in their school day; from arriving, hanging coat, eating breakfast, doing math, going to homeroom, eating lunch, recess, music etc. Photos of student acting appropriately and doing what is requested will be used in "social stories" to bridge connection of understanding.

As students progress with their learning and understanding, photos may be taken of significant items in their personal experience levels to build vocabulary, and lead to reading. Who knows what benefits and unknown lessons will be discovered during this endeavor?! hide»
