Going Green:Hands-On Science In Our Greenhouse

My students need peat pots and soil so they can grow plants in our greenhouse.

My Students

Help our children play and learn in the dirt! We have a greenhouse on our campus, and I'd like to provide the materials needed for every student in our school to initiate, nurture and observe the growth of a plant.

Our students live in apartments, mobile homes and rental properties that do not allow for a gardening experience.

Our school is part of a public district that was physically and financially devastated by Hurricane Katrina and is now being devastated by the oil spilling into the Gulf of Mexico. We have approximately 640 students in grades Kindergarten through Fifth. There are 6 classrooms for each grade level. We are a diverse population with the majority of our students enrolled in the free or reduced lunch program. Our district budget has been severely cut, and we will not have the dollars available to purchase consumable materials that are needed for this project.

My Project

The resources requested in this project are peat pots, soil and books. Every student in the school will be able to participate by selecting the type of plant they want to grow. Plants will be nurtured in our campus greenhouse and will then be transplanted into various locations on our campus, turning unattractive beds into bright and colorful displays that can be used as outdoor learning centers. Students will learn how plants grow and the structure of plants and will take on the responsibility for ensuring their plant remains healthy.

The goal of this project is for our students to plant and nurture vegetable and flower plants that will be transplanted into beds on our campus, turning many unproductive areas into outdoor biological learning centers.

This project will reach every student in our school, regardless of age. Younger students will be able to examine various types of seeds, plant them, and watch them grow. Older students will research growing techniques, set variables, predict outcomes, and analyze results.
