University Bound Heritage Speakers of Spanish

My students need 5 heritage level Spanish books so that they have a textbook.

My Students

How would you like to go to Italy and be placed in an English classroom where you are being taught the months and colors in English! This is what it is like for many of our heritage speakers of Spanish in the Spanish foreign language classroom. Our school is offering a new Spanish language course.

We are a high school in a rural valley.

Our school goal is to increase the number of graduates seeking further education after high school. Our highest number of dropouts, failures, and absenteeism are attributed to our Hispanic population. My mission is to provide a curriculum in Spanish that is unlike the traditional foreign language classroom for our heritage speakers of Spanish. The learners will receive rich, in-depth language lessons with classic literature, vocabulary to promote success in high school Algebra and Physics, and a knowledge of world political, economic, and social issues. We are an excellent public school. After fifteen years of public school teaching as a Spanish teacher and a two year mission service in Peru, I presented this new course. A heritage level Spanish course will provide strong literacy skills for our bilingual students which will foster success in high school in general. It will help the children understand their heritage as well.

My Project

We need in reality 20 textbooks for a course that will begin in January of 2011. I was unable to request the total amount. These textbooks will be in use during the next 5 to 10 years so the donation is not a one-time project. It is a resource that will be used for a long time. It is often difficult for children who at the age of 10 or more are brought to the United States by their parents and not by their own volition. Our new course, Spanish for Heritage Speakers, will encourage pride in the Hispanic culture through history lessons, provide rich literary texts to analyze, as well as provide thematic studies on the advantages and disadvantages of immigration, political assets and debates in our world, and windows into environmental issues. Our classroom will be a rich Spanish language classroom for those that speak Spanish in their homes. It will promote higher-level thinking and opportunities to "think about thinking" or metacognition.

I can make a difference in my high school.

I will offer lessons to heritage speakers of Spanish that will strengthen and sharpen high school performance in general. Likewise, the path to university will be a bit easier for these children.
