Shakespeare Made Easy

My students need 35 copies each of "Romeo and Juliet" and "Macbeth" in the Shakespeare Made Easy series.

My Students

Say the name "Shakespeare" to a classroom full of middle school students and you are guaranteed to hear a chorus of moans and groans. It doesn't have to be like that. I believe you can get students motivated to read Shakespeare and, dare I say, understand it... maybe even like it.

I teach English Literature to 6th and 8th grade students in a large, urban middle school in New York City.

I believe it is absolutely necessary to introduce these students to the classics and Shakespeare's plays are at the top of the list. It is extremely challenging for 6th graders to read "Romeo and Juliet" in the original text. The language is difficult for them to understand and we must constantly stop and try to translate lines. It is a slow process, but eventually they start to understand and enjoy the play.

My Project

This year I purchased one copy of "Shakespeare Made Easy" and had the translation available for each scene. I was able to read sections of the text in Modern English. If I had a class set of "Shakespeare Made Easy" so that each student would have the original and translation right in front of them, we would be able to understand and discuss the play at a deeper level and they would not be so intimidated by the difficult language.

By instilling a love of Shakespeare in Middle School, the students will not moan and groan at the prospect of reading Hamlet and other plays that are required reading in High School.

This will help them not only understand Shakespeare, but they will gain an understanding of literary allusion in other literature, since Shakespeare is one of the most referenced authors in all of literature. Think back to when you first tried to read Shakespeare and how difficult it was. It can be different!
