EN - Visioning the Future

My students need a netbook computer with a protective sleeve, a printer and a mouse.

My Students

"Open your math books and turn to page 45. We are going to practice our math facts today." With a netbook, students will no longer have to hear that ages-old teacher statement! With a netbook, students will be able to access virtual math sites, including FIRST IN MATH - a step into the future.

My students attend a K-8 rural school in Oklahoma.

We are very proud of our students and maintain a one-on-one relationship with them. We have a huge parental support system, creating a family-like atmosphere. However, because of the budget shortfall this year, we do not have the extra funds available to purchase enrichment materials. It is difficult for a 2nd grader to visualize math and reading concepts in such an archaic form - the textbook! With a netbook, students will be able to EN-Vision the real world by visiting virtual math and reading web sites that allow interactive participation and instant results, a necessary feedback in today's educational environment. Students will be able to see, hear, and manipulate math and reading concepts in a virtual world environment, creating a one-on-one teaching tool.

My Project

Math is a difficult language for elementary students. With a netbook, my students will be able to further enhance their math knowledge by accessing the FIRST IN MATH website that allows for individual practice and will be able to cover a plethora of math skills. My students will also be able to do investigative work after completing their daily math smartboard lesson by accessing teacher given websites that will enhance and extend the concept taught. Besides using the netbook for math, my students will be able to take ACCELERATED READER tests, an online reading program that will further enhance and enrich the classroom reading concepts being taught. Accessing the ACCELERATED READER program on the netbook will allow for visual as well as auditory comprehension skills to be mastered. The netbook will also be used for special needs students who have difficulty with vision, hearing, dyslexia, and dysgraphia.

Because of the budget deficit for public schools, our students will not be receiving the 'extras' this year.

With your help of purchasing a netbook, our students will be able to continue to strive for excellence and feel a wonderful sense of accomplishment in both math and reading. With the netbook, students will be able to go beyond the classroom and begin seeing how math and reading are relevant in the real world and how they may apply never thought about concepts to their future careers.
