My students need 24 printmaking supplies in order to complete a unit I teach every year.

My Students

Learning printmaking is the perfect example of how art makes you think! Many adults are not familiar with the process, and when my students learn, they become experts in thinking in reverse. I take my students to local museums every year and they actively search out any prints on display.

My students live in the most diverse borough in the country: Queens, New York.

They come from countries such as China, Israel, Korea, Uzbekistan, Ethiopia, Dominion Republic, Vietnam, Ukraine, Brazil, Pakistan, Venezuela, Mexico, India, and many more. They attend a 6th to 9th grade Middle School in a well populated area of Forest Hills. They are not unlike any Middle School students who are exploring their identities and how they fit into this world. Art is the perfect medium for this exploration.

My Project

I am always inventing new ways of introducing printmaking to my students. They could just scratch into styrofoam and make a printing plate, roll ink on it with a brayer, place paper on top of the inked plate, rub and pull the paper off to produce the "print". But I have developed over the years a group printmaking project. This year each student designed an image of an endangered species and cut the image in contour out of oak tag board. We used a larger sheet of tag board as a background and inked it with one color. Each student then inked their pieces choosing one of several different ink colors. Their pieces were placed face up on the background plate, and then paper was placed over the plate and a print was pulled. We can do different versions of these plates by lifting up the individual pieces and inking them again. When we have exhausted this process, we ink the entire plate with white ink and then print onto black paper. The original colors seep through.

The entire process must happen very quickly because the ink dries.

This forces my students to think quickly and make aesthetic decisions as they go along. Of course they quickly realize that the print is the mirror image of the plate, so if they want any words in the print these must be reversed on their plates. I cannot imagine a year in art class without a unit in printmaking. Every grade designs different types of plates to print, but each year all the students want to make a group print.
