My Students

The greatest investment to learn happens when students generate the ideas for their own learning. This project grew out of my students' interest in defining their own community.

My students live in a community in Hawaii that has an undeserved negative reputation.

Whenever I am outside of the community and tell people where I teach, they respond with negative stereotypes. My students face this too, to a much more pronounced degree. As they get older, some students begin to internalize the negative stereotypes and prevent themselves from reaching their full potential. I want to make sure my students know that their community is a positive place to live.

My Project

When my students expressed interest in learning more about their community, I began to seek out books on its history. Few resources exist. I need resources to help my students talk to their kupuna and create an oral history of their community through storytelling. I am requesting 5 digital audio recorders, 2 books on the history of Waianae, and a reference set for Hawaii. These resources will allow the students to learn Waianae history through their kupuna.

When children are faced with negative images of who they are, they often begin to believe and internalize those images.

It is important that my students understand that their community has many positive aspects and that where they come from does not define who they will be.
