Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What was the first book that changed your life? Crossing the Wire by Will Hobbs, All of the Above by Shelley Pearsall, and The Watsons go to Birmingham 1963 by Christopher Paul Curtis were books that inspired students from 6th grade book club to question their perceptions of the world around them.

95% of the students at our school live below the poverty level.

Even though my students have their everyday struggles, they are eager to learn and would love the opportunity to participate in a book club. They live in an insular world and many have a limited vision about what the future might hold for them. Books open the door to new worlds and many, many new ideas.

My Project

Our students are from an impoverished urban community. Books provide a window to a world that will foster aspirations for a future that often seems impossible to attain. Last year was the first time that our students had an opportunity to participate in a book group discussion. The eight books that they read last year opened new worlds to them. Not only were the books discussed during the book group meeting, they were passed around and discussed by many other students throughout the year. My students need books to continue the 6th grade book club this year, such as Double Identity, The Wish Giver: Three Tales of Coven, and Island of the Aunts.Research shows that when students discuss books, their comprehension improves. It was very exciting to watch students inspiring other students to read and explore new ideas!

We hope to continue to offer this year's 6th grade students the same opportunity.

This life changing opportunity is only possible through outside funding. Please consider helping a child to recognize the potential for a future far beyond the world they know today.
