Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember art classes in elementary school when you got to something different than drawing? The most engaging art experiences were always the ones when you go to work with new and exciting materials. The students love yarn for the art.

My students are bright, caring individuals who are eager to learn.

As an art teacher, I see every student in my school once a week, and they are all wonderful in their own unique ways. I teach at a Title 1 school, which means that our population is very high need. The faculty are very focused on providing a variety of opportunities to our students, giving them what they need to learn and grow.

My Project

My students absolutely love to weave. They really enjoy doing projects outside the realm of drawing. They also like that they can actually use the pieces they weave for a purpose. My first graders would be making ojos de dios, the second graders would be making woven baskets with the yarn, third grade would be making small belts, and fourth grade would be making dreamcatchers. Students will learn about pattern and repetition, develop motor skills, and will learn about Native American and Mexican art as part of the unit.

This is an opportunity to really help create enjoyable, valuable art experiences for my students.

Without your help, we will not be able to do our weaving projects this year because of drastic budget cuts. Please help make this possible for us.
