This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school recently purchased a new language arts program which contains a writing component. This component requires our kindergarten students to write everyday. These journals and homework folders are essential to support this process to ensure our kindergarten students become successful writers.

I work in a Title I public elementary school.

My students are kindergarteners. Most qualify for free/reduced breakfast and lunch. Many of our families have lost jobs due to our present economy and subsequently their homes. I cannot at this time request my families to spend any extra income they might have on journals and homework folders for their students.

My Project

Students' access to their own writing journal, instead of daily pieces of paper, will establish their ability to write freely and creatively about their stories. Oftentimes, kindergarteners are hesitant to begin writing because they do not know how to. If they have their very own journal, they will feel more comfortable in writing and it will be for their eyes and mine. They can then share their writing when they feel confident. At Open House, I will be asking them to pick their favorite story which we will then officially publish. Our Open House will be a "Meet the Author," where the students will book sign their stories as big authors do!

Journals will make my students lifelong writers and will encourage them to develop creative thought and the confidence to share.

These skills will stay with them throughout their educational and personal lives.
