My Students

I teach third grade in a public school in West Virginia.

Most of my students live with single parents and grandparents. Several of my students have been severely challenged by life's early experiences, including having to move frequently and having very little stability. School has been the only safe environment for many of my students, so I am determined to make it a place that they can consider "home".

My Project

Picture a perfect rainy afternoon curled up with a good book. Unfortunately, many of my students only associate reading with sitting in a desk at school, for there is little reading occurring at home. My goal is to create a classroom library where students can choose high interest books and then lounge on the carpet while getting lost in a good book. I have requested an 8'x12' blue rug and a 5 shelf bookshelf for our classroom library.

Your donation will help me to create a classroom library that makes my students feel comfortable and more likely to become passionate about reading.

I truly believe that if students feel relaxed and safe, they are more likely to succeed in school.
