My students need 30 copies of "Flush" for a special novel study combining environmental issues with reading.

My Students

The oil spill disaster in the gulf brings environmental issues of the area to the forefront. My students rarely watch the news or become involved with the world other than with music or video games. I want to bring the issue of saving the environment to the classroom in a way that will be exciting.

My students are intensive readers.

They rarely pick up a book on their own. I want to bring them a story that is relevant to their lives, that they can identify with. This story has a Florida setting, and already that will peak their interest. It will tie into the environment and so serve a dual purpose of injecting science into their reading. It will broaden their horizons by making them aware of the problems of the environment they live in. And as a bonus it will be fun to read so that they can see that reading is an enjoyable activity.

My Project

I am requesting a class set of the novel Flush. We will do a novel study using this book as a base. Included in the study will be a chance to expand their vocabulary as well as a chance to explore environmental issues. An inter-disciplinary activity such as this book affords, makes the curriculum connect in a way that is invaluable for the students. It will create an interest in their state and the environment that I hope will be everlasting.

The importance of the project is that my students will then be aware of the environment and the problems involved in protecting it as well as enjoying a book that connects their state to their lives.

I hope they will take the projects that we do with the book and further their awareness and commitment to saving the earth.
