As our country becomes more “green” I want to actively encourage my students to take care of the world we live in. This begins with teaching them all about the Earth and the environment. They already understand the concept of recycling in order to help the Earth and now want to learn more.
My students are a multi-cultural, heterogeneous group of children who live in low-income housing with their families.
Their urban community in New York is not safe enough for them to explore properly. However, they are curious and eager to learn about the world around them. They enjoy listening to read-louds and looking at real-life photography. They enjoy reading together and working on hands-on group projects as well.
My Project
In order to assist my second graders learn environmental issues, I am asking for hands-on Earth Science materials including real-life photo books, read-alouds, discovery boxes and games. The rich discussions that will come from looking at the photos and exploring the non-fiction books will be great. I know they will eagerly look forward to using the games and discovery boxes during center time with their partner or group members. Classroom experiments will also be conducted using some of these materials. We will also be taking field trips, and using the background knowledge we are gathering as the basis for our field explorations.
This project will help create future "green" environmentalists!
We all know that schools have limited budgets to work with, and with your donations, we can continue to provide a well balanced hands-on approach to learning that will engage all learners.
