My Students

Daily, my students face many obstacles that hinder them from learning: homelessness, abandonment, hunger, and poverty. Daily we start our day off with saying "I am what I say I am" as a reminder that we can rise above the many challenges that face us at home.

My students are the future doctors, lawyers, and teachers America is waiting for.

They attend a school that has excellent facilities but a tight budget. It seems classroom sizes keep growing in Indiana while budgets continue to get smaller. My students come from single parent households which truly presents some distrust of me, a male at times. I remind them daily that I, too, came from single parent home and grew up in a rough neighborhood but was nurtured and encouraged to do better than those around me. In addition, daily, my students can report some type of violent act that has occurred the prior night. Many times there is a family relation to the students in my class. My students talk openly about their struggles and their fears of never overcoming. By reading novels that present characters who have endured hardship and overcome obstacles before them, I hope to show students that they can overcome and be successful in spite of current situations.

My Project

My students need 35 copies of Forged By Fire to engage in a literature unit. By reading this novel, students will be able to read about someone who decided to keep on going in spite of their present circumstances. Sometimes it is easy to lose hope of something better because it seems like everything that could possibly happen happens to you. Through the discussions and the deep analysis that will accompany this novel, it is my hope students will realize that they are not alone and someone can relate.

By donating to this project, you will allow my students to see that they are not alone in overcoming adversity.

By reading about someone who has endured as much, or more, than they have, my students will realize that they can overcome the obstacles that face them at home or in the neighborhoods in which they reside.
