My Students

El aprendizaje de una lengua es difícil. (Translation: Learning a language is difficult.) My students are struggling with many challenges and barriers both academically and culturally. I want to give them as much support and success as possible in achieving their dreams - their American dreams.

My school is considered "high poverty." In my state, our school has less per pupil spending than any other public school and my state is 47th in the Nation for per pupil spending.

Unfortunately, we are the lowest of the low in the nation. However, we have a can-do spirit. We will and do overcome these financial challenges and obstacles daily. Ask my students and they will tell you that they have a good school, because the teachers care and the students are great leaders, learners, and believers. We believe in making the world a better place; not just our classroom, not just our school, not just our town, not just our state, but our world. We are wealthy in that we have strong families, strong communities, and strong beliefs. My students feel empowered, encouraged, and enthused when they see the classroom as an extension of the outside world. What they learn in the classroom does not only reflect the outside world, but it can also form, inform, and transform it.

My Project

These resources will enable my students’ access to learning coaches via the Scholastic Read 180 program. We have used the program for the past three years and have seen tremendous improvement in vocabulary development, understanding, comprehension and fluency. The equipment is used daily and therefore is beginning to show wear. These resources will allow the program to be refreshed and renewed. With a new cassette player, a new CD player and new headphones, the students will be excited to use the system. As it is, electrical tape is holding some of the headphones together. One of our cassette players mutilates the tapes and students fight to get the better players. The eight player system will allow more students to participate at once and keep “fighting” out of the room. As far as the word wall equipment, I currently use a homemade version. However, I think that the professional and clean look of the charts will help create a better classroom atmosphere.

My title for this project is “Be Green.

Go Blue.” Not only is this theme apparent in the colors that I selected for the equipment, but it is also an important message that I will be sharing with my students this year. With the current environmental changes in the world, my students have and will continue to learn that they are an important part of that impact. That what they say and do can and does affect change. I will be focusing our classroom projects around this theme, "Be Green. Go Blue.
