Out of Hot water into a Cool Breeze

My students need thermometers to record data from our homemade water wall heat exchanger and need an ipod to play and share their podcasts about their findings.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The challenge for students is to use innovative ideas to use the sun's energy as fully as possible and create projects to share their ideas with others. Students use water-walls made of black PVC to collect the sun's energy and cool a greenhouse and then exchange the water later to use the heat.

Our students are from a low income, title one school.

We are a new school in the growing process. The students undertake a rigorous curriculum and have high expectations placed on them. We are a small school of about 600 students so options are limited and any extra hands-on curriculum that embraces technology provides more options for our students.

My Project

Nearly every student has an ipod or mp3 player and can be an ideal interface for learning. Students will use the ipod to share video and audio podcasts based on data-driven, original ideas, creating a platform for dialogue among students, thus providing a learning experience at a much higher level. The ipod can create a virtual field trip through our greenhouse and spark student imagination with questions to base their own hypothesis on. Students can strive to answer one question: "how can we use the water wall to keep the greenhouse at a given temperature?" Students will use the thermometers to record and analyze temperature data and to learn about heat transfer and the relationships to the world around them.

This money will make a considerable difference because the newly created greenhouse and energy investigations involving it will be greatly enhanced by further support.

The more materials we have means that more students will benefit from it on an individual basis. Students get excited when they get to do hands-on, real life projects. Students will become real scientists by publishing their results via podcasts and other students will use the podcast to help develop their own experiments.
