My Students

Books are a wonderful way to explore new places, meet new people, and learn about the things in our world.

I teach students with special needs.

They are all eager learners; however, much of the reading required is above their ability level. While they do enjoy reading books that are on their level, as they get older they show an interest in other reading materials that may be too difficult for them to read independently. Our school has numerous programs geared towards increasing their ability levels; however, there is still a need and desire to access material now.

My Project

By providing students with personal listening devices, they will have the opportunity to listen to stories they find interesting. As they listen, they are also following along in the book, which helps increase their sight word vocabulary and allows them to focus on comprehending the text versus decoding the words. They will also have the opportunity to listen to grade level textbooks on tape. This gives them access to the concepts and ideas which will allow them to participate in classroom discussions and projects with minimal assistance from others.

Students will continue to work on necessary skills and strategies so that they will eventually be able to read independently; however, the use of the cassette or CD player will give them access to knowledge and allow them to become active and engaged learners now.

Students who participate gain confidence and want to try harder. This in turn promotes progress and leads to independence and growth.
