My Students

A teacher's praise to a student feels warm, loving, and encouraging. How amazing would it be to multiply that feeling for struggling readers by allowing them to effortlessly project successful work for their peers to see and then hear the encouraging words of "awesome" from all around the room?

The students I teach every day are so hard working.

They have to be because the expectations of 3rd and 4th grade get harder every day. The fast paced world of the upper grades is enough to make any primary teacher work at 110% to get her students ready for the big world of education out there. The struggling readers I work with each day are my deepest concern. They are eager to read like their peers, but this is not a wish they can always have right away. Day after day we work so hard together to strengthen their skills and praise them for all gains. Learning to read can feel exhausting, repetitive, and lonely when students see their peers reading those "cool chapter books" or getting A's on writing effortlessly. Struggling students, whether they are my ELL students, special needs students, or just emerging readers, all deserve a chance to feel successful too. Those feelings are what keep them going.

My Project

The ELMO projector will allow me to foster leadership and success in my classroom. This will happen as I choose a student to project his/her classwork larger than life onto a screen for all to see. The student can then read his/her work to the class as the others follow along, explain an image he/she drew of the story, or even lead the class in an activity by teaching them the steps to complete. An ELMO projector is amazing because not only does classwork get projected instantly, but classmates can follow along as the student leader points at, circles, or underlines important parts of his/her work. The ELMO projector shows everything on the screen including the student's hand, marker, and movements! Despite the personal learning struggles a student may face, for that moment, he/she is a leader!

This projector will become the *star* of the classroom...our ELMO!

I can visualize students working extra hard on a paper and begging to show it to the class. I can hear the clapping and praise of "wow" and "great job" that classmates will give their struggling peers. I can see smiles of pride on faces that are usually crinkled up deep in exhausting thought. Most importantly, the playing field can be leveled as struggling readers become leaders by modeling their successful work for the class!
