My Students

Mention "The Outsiders" to any adult of a certain age and the look in his or her eyes tells you why this is an important novel for adolescents to share. S.E. Hinton says she wrote this novel because it was the kind of novel she wanted to read as a teen, and kids still do want to read it!

Our school is in rural NJ (yes, there is a rural NJ!).

This past year was especially challenging for our school community. Within a four week period this spring, we dealt with the deaths of the fathers of three 7-8th grade students as well as the death of a teacher who taught 8th grade language arts here for 38 years. These students are facing life head on, together ... much like the characters in "The Outsiders".

My Project

"The Outsiders" by S.E. Hinton was written over 40 years ago, yet it continues to reach students dealing with adolescence today. Most importantly, this gripping novel has appeal to all readers. I hope to use this novel to start off the school year because, first and foremost, it teaches kids to enjoy reading. As their teacher, I capitalize on that joy for the entire school year.

The lessons I teach in Grade 8 Language Arts Literacy go far beyond the four walls of my classroom.

My goal is not only to get students to read, but also to think. A reader who is engaged in text enjoys reading. Plain and simple, students who enjoy reading read. Providing this novel as a common text will be an important first experience for my students as 8th graders.
