Reading Across the Lines

My students need 40 copies of "My Brother Sam is Dead" as well as 1 teacher's guide while studying the American Revolution.

My Students

What better way to reinforce American history than to read a novel?

I teach at an inner city, public, Title 1 school.

My students are 8th graders ranging from 14-16 years old. I teach 2 8th grade classes, with 20 students per class. A majority of my students have never left the city where they live. They are hungry for knowledge and it is my job to provide it.

My Project

Beginning next year, I will teach middle school social studies. With a language arts background and knowing my students do not have enough resources of their own to have a novel, I will reinforce reading during American History. My students will be able to make connections that they would not have been able to do by simply reading out of a text book or doing some other activity. The characters in the novel "My Brother Sam Is Dead" will create a sense of what is was like during the American Revolution and they will ask themselves, "How much has truly changed over time?"

If you donate these novels to my 8th grade students, I know they will soak up the information and story like a sponge.

These students need more resources to learn the information. The students and I will be very appreciative.
