Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Think about how powerful it was to hear someone read a book to you, before you learned to read yourself. Our students are just starting out on their reading journeys and the 8th graders at our school have generously offered to purchase 80 books and record themselves reading those books to our kids.

We have 92 amazing incoming Kindergarteners ranging from 4 to 5 years old.

Most of them come from low-income backgrounds but have high expectations for their teachers and themselves. This will be our founding year for our students, meaning this is the first year our school will be open. They are curious, bright, imaginative and eager to become a part of our community.

My Project

The mp3 players would allow our students the opportunity to have books being read to them. They would give them individual reading time, even when a teacher cannot be reading to/with them. They would also give our students a sense of independence and confidence as they listen to the words and follow along in the book. Not only will these mp3 players improve their technological skills but will hone their ability to read fluently as well as expose them to new vocabulary. Even more powerful is the fact that the voices they will be listening to will be students who have blazed the trail at our school and we believe that greatly strengthens community bonds .

Not only will they feel special by having really "cool" hi-tech gadgets in the their classroom but they will also learn to read by using them on a daily basis.
