My Students

College science courses are nothing like high school. I do everything I can to instill a love of science in my students. I also do everything I can to prepare them for the next step of their lives. For my anatomy students, preparing for lab practicals is an important skill for nursing school.

I teach at a moderate poverty high school in Kentucky.

My human anatomy class is full of students who are planning a future in the medical field, namely nursing. They love science, and choose to take this difficult elective to prepare for the demanding courses they will be taking in college. Most high school students have not been exposed to the process of a lab practical. Remember the first time you took one? It's even more stressful if you don't know what to expect. By teaching them through models, I meet two important goals. First, they learn by seeing and touching, which is important for retention. Second, they learn the same way they will in college. I teach how to prepare for lab practicals, and then give them the opportunity to experience lab practicals.

My Project

The models that I have requested will allow me to teach about the circulatory, nervous, and integumentary systems with a hands on approach. The student will be able touch and closely examine the major organs of these systems. I know that these models will add to my lessons, and enhance student learning. Having these models will also allow me to set up a more realistic lab practical setting, further preparing my students for the demanding college curriculum they have chosen.

These 3-D models will allow my aspiring nurses to visualize the organs and body systems they are studying.
