My Students

We are trying to create a new Holocaust course in a time of budget cuts and limited resources.

My students attend a large high school in Oregon.

We have a very diverse student body with large Latino and Asian populations. Our school has a history of strong performance in band, drama, and the visual arts. Over the past couple of years, the students have partnered with staff to implement a positive behavior system and diversity/unity events.

My Project

The copies of the book that you are providing will serve as the foundational text for the class. There are quality Internet resources available, in particular the United States Holocaust Memorial and Museum's site, but a text is important also. Rita Botwinick traces the roots and history of anti-Semitism and then the rise of Hitler and the Nazi's before getting to the Holocaust events themselves. This historical context is what students are sorely lacking in their knowledge of the Holocaust.

Our goals for launching a course in Holocaust Studies include allowing students to "dig in" to a historical event for deeper analysis and understanding than the usual "survey" history classes allow.

Students also have high-interest in the Holocaust due to the enormity and complexity of the events. More than anything, we hope that students learn the importance of taking action to stop cruelty, bigotry, and injustice before it is too late.
