Wonderous Word Wall Webs

My students need cork strips, laminating film, poster tape, paper, and yarn.

My Students

My middle school students struggle to remember poetry terms and literary devices.

I teach middle school English in a rural district in upstate New York.

My students have trouble remembering definitions of literary and poetic devices like characterization, metaphor, or hyperbole. While we use flashcards, crossword puzzles, and other fun review games, some students still need additional reinforcement.

My Project

By cutting the cork stripping into 2 inch sections and spreading them out all over my wall, I can laminate bright neon literary terms with definitions and examples. The yarn will allow me to literally 'tie' related terms together (like simile and metaphor), and to tie examples and definitions to the terms, creating a visually appealing web of literature.

One of the most useful and powerful techniques to learn important vocabulary, in this case literary terms, is through repetition.

By giving students constant visual reminders throughout the school year, they will that much more prepared for state testing, and for success in high school English.
