My Students

Do you remember what it was like to take those long, intense standardized tests in school? Is it A? Maybe B? C looks like it could be right... My students do not perform proficiently on state standardized tests, even though they are bright and understand reading and language concepts.

More than 60% of the students at my school live in poverty.

We stress to our students that they should all strive to go to college, but many of my students' families don't have the tools to help their children get there. My students are the children of farm workers who have to spend their summers working in fields with their families. To help them break the cycle of poverty, my students need to be successful at school and on standardized tests.

My Project

No matter what opinions we may have about No Child Left Behind and the high-stakes tests that our students must take, the truth is that they have to take the tests. By using individual white boards each day to practice answering multiple-choice questions, I can quickly assess if my students are answering questions correctly or not. Students can write the answer to the question and hold it up for me to see. With a quick glance, I can assess the entire class and either review a concept or know that my students understand it. Using the white boards also eliminates the need for students to spend precious time getting paper out of their folders for this practice. With the boards, we will quickly work through warm-up questions and move on to our activities for the day.

Having these boards in my room will allow all of my students an opportunity to respond to practice questions.

I want ALL of my students, not just the ones who always raise their hands, to have a chance to think through practice questions and give me their answer. This daily practice will give them the confidence to walk into the testing rooms each spring knowing how to read, think about, and correctly answer the questions they encounter.
