My Students

3 Rs – Reading and writing can be taught in the math classroom. Students need background knowledge to make connections. Reading math picture books can help students link new math concepts to prior knowledge.

My students are a lively bunch of fifth graders.

They rotate classes and I see about one hundred students a day in my math class. They are eager to learn and strive hard for success. They are from a high poverty area in South Carolina and though some of them have very little, they make gains in learning by leaps and bounds. On an average, fifty percent of my class comes to me on or below grade level. Everyday students share their dreams about how they are going to grow up to become a professional (doctor or lawyer) one day. As a professional they need a foundation grounded in math and reading.

My Project

By using math story books, I can share my love of math and reading with my students. Students are taught that math is important, and that reading is important. By using picture books like Jumanji, students will be able to roll the dice and learn about probability. With Esio Trot, the students will learn about estimation and division. With Math Curse, students will gain the understanding that math is absolutely everywhere! By reading these books and having many engaging activities, students will learn and have an appreciation for math.

With access to these picture and chapter books, my students will develop a love for math.

It provides a new approach to hook students’ attention. They will read these books making every chapter in the math book seem not so intimidating. These picture books will be used as teachable moments.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
