My Students

Help us develop hundreds of little green thumbs! A new school-based garden will give our 450 elementary students the opportunity to have hands-on experience with planting and cultivating vegetables and herbs. But we need tools!

The students at this neighborhood public elementary are motivated to secure a green future.

Annually, these students collect cans and coins for Earth day. Despite the fact that our city does not contract with the school district for recycling, students helped launched a paper recycling effort in April 2010. They also plant flower bulbs around the school property. Now they are ready to take on a school garden.

My Project

The picture shows where our plot has been cleared! Gardeners in our community have helped identify the perfect school area for four small raised beds, and parent volunteers are willing to help build them this summer. When students return to school in early August, I hope to have tools and seeds ready to let students begin. I will be working with students in grades 1-5 in small groups in the garden.

A small school garden is the next logical step for our students, who have already shown interest in sustainability with their recycling and Earth day efforts.

The neighborhood school community is supportive of the garden and will help ensure its success.
