My Students

We are in love with a Revolutionary War diary called The Winter of Red Snow! We love it so much that I travel nearly 30 minutes to another school to borrow their copies because the book has been out-of-print for years! Fortunately, though, it is back in print and we want copies of our VERY own!

My fourth grade students attend a large school in a suburban South Carolina community.

Some are students who are beginning language learners while others are Challenge students, and many are somewhere in between. Some students are sports stars, some are artistic, and some have yet to find their exact interests or talents. Some students have access to the Internet or books, some do not. As a matter of fact, some of our students do not own a book at all. That's why it is up to me to provide quality learning experiences that all students, regardless of their interests or abilities, can enjoy!

My Project

Having our own copies of the terrific novel, Dear America: The Winter of Red Snow means that we can actually read the story while learning about the Revolutionary War! We won't have to wait until the other school is finished with them. My students will have a better understanding of the events of the war because the story will provide them with characters and events of great interest. The girls love the character of Abigail Stewart, who they can relate to, and the boys love the graphic details of the story such as the snow being red with blood from the bleeding feet of soldiers. No other book in my nearly 15 years of teaching, is so closely related to the historical period and so popular with all students who have read it! We have struggled for years trying to locate multiple copies of this book and are thrilled that it is going to be back in print. What better way to learn history than from the eyes of someone experiencing the events for themselves!

Everyone says the key to understanding history is to make it come alive for the learner.

The challenge is getting them to comprehend people and events that lived in a time so different from their own. This book does that for my students. They relate to the characters, the soldiers, and even Martha Washington. Your generous donation will help my students develop more knowledge and more than that, understanding about the American Revolution and it's impact on the lives of the people involved.
