My Students

"There are no passengers on Spaceship Earth. We are all crew," Marshall McLuhan said, and our kids are willing to help steer. Our classroom runs a recycling service for our school because our students see Earth beset by environmental catastrophe.

Our kids come from an urban, post-industrial setting.

Many jobs have left; the pollution remains. Our students enroll in our school because their families are not satisfied with the local public school system. Not only do our students' grapple with the issues of poverty, my students have all been identified with learning disabilities, intellectual disabilities, or behavioral disorders. Many of my kiddos have ADHD, thus they tend to struggle in the traditional classroom.

My Project

Our classroom is seeking 36 recycling bins to help run our service learning recycling program. These bins will replace the fractured remains of our patchwork collection system. Broken bins and sharp edges remain from our donated buckets and bins from last year that were not properly designed for recycling. These new bins will replace the shambled mess for a long time. Your donation will allow my students to continue participating in a service learning, recycling program. Service learning is powerful, positive experience that promotes a deeper understanding. It gives my kids something to work towards, an appropriate outlet for their energy, a connection to their school and community, and a chance to develop their agency (their power to change their environment for the better).

Our classroom are fed up with the environmental crises facing our nation.

The have the desire to change the world. You can help give them the means. This project will help our students develop a self-confidence that they can create changes in their immediate environment.
