Successful Sunshine Readers

My students need one copy of each of 14 Sunshine State Readers books and a class set of last year's Sunshine State book "Punished!" for a literature study.

My Students

Let the competition begin! Our state chooses fifteen books to be considered in grades 3-5 for the Sunshine State Reader award. Our school motivates readers to participate in the voting by rewarding them for the books they read from the list. This makes the books a hot commodity at our school!

My school is located in the downtown area of a large city and houses a very diverse population.

We have over 800 students and serve a wide range of ESE, ESOL, behaviorally handicapped, and visually impaired students. I teach a group of very diverse, in race, culture, and ability, students. My third grade students all have a large range of ability, ranging from below grade level emergent readers, to well above grade level readers. Some of my students are extremely motivated to read on their own. They have an intense love for books and they are likely to choose a variety of genres and difficulty when reading. Then, the more average students will read only books in their comfort zone, books that they feel are easy to read and comprehend, without pushing the perceived limits of their mind. Finally, the struggling readers prefer to read simple kindergarten or first grade leveled books and consequently are often bored with the content.

My Project

To motivate lifelong readers, our school has a program for students that choose to read the 15 Sunshine State Books for the 2010-2011 school year. These books have been chosen by the state to be considered for the Sunshine State Young Readers Award. Any student, grades 3-5, in our school that reads at least 3 books may vote for their favorite. If they read 6 books, they get a free frozen yogurt coupon, 9 earns them a chance to have their name in a hat for a free book, and any student who reads 14 or 15 of the Sunshine State books is invited to attend a Literary Luncheon featuring a local author. The wonderful thing about this contest is that the list of books is so diverse in content, ranging from a book about a pet gerbil, to a piece of historical fiction during World War II. By having a set of all books, I can extend this opportunity to all of my students. With a class set of one of last years books, I can lead a book study that would show students some of the great content.

Classroom libraries are the core of a great reading program.

Textbooks and lessons in workbooks are important, but the books that students read by choice will ultimately keep them coming back for more. By including these award winning books in my classroom library, I can entice more readers to participate in our school wide contest or simply lure them into reading something new and different. The class set of "Punished" I have requested is sure to spark their interest in reading.
