Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school needs help this year to get ready for writing! Our budget has been cut way down and flair pens are very expensive.

Our school is located in one of the poorest congressional districts in the US.

98% of our students are Hispanic and almost all receive free breakfast and lunch. The school is surrounded by a violent neighborhood with a high crime rate. I have seen such progress in my 4 years there when a new principal came in to make some serious changes. She utilizes a Teacher's College curriculum- a curriculum which has proved to work in schools in affluent areas. With a new principal and new attitudes towards these students' potential, I am seeing a major change in the children's self-esteem, behavior and work ethic.

My Project

We like using the flair pens in the primary grades at our school for several reasons. Pencils break and have to be sharpened and the students can use the erasers. We want them to write as much as possible so we try to teach crossing out mistakes instead of erasing. With pens, they cross out. Ball point pens, although cheaper, don't always work. The flair pens are a great resource for our students.

This is an expensive material to ask for at our school.

At others schools, with smartboards in each classroom, this material would be easily supplied. They are important for our young writers in continuing to raise their quality of writing.
