Getting 3-D in a Multi Dimensional World

My students need 2 sets of 3-dimensional shapes to better understand this concept in high school geometry.

My Students

Can you picture what a rectangular prism is at the mention of the word? What about finding the surface area of it? What about it's net? It's often hard for students to be able to understand the shape let alone the geometry formulas needed with each 3 dimensional shape studied in high school geometry.

My geometry students range from sophomores to seniors in high school geometry.

Our school has nearly 1600 students. They are taking a college preparatory class while not always fully understanding the algebraic concepts from the year before. Geometry is sandwiched between Algebra I and Algebra II at my school. We use algebra in solving formulas for volume and surface area while studying 3 dimensional properties.

My Project

Touch and see is not just for elementary students anymore. High schoolers need to be able to touch and see mathematics to better understand just as much as elementary students do. High schoolers need to be able to recognize the properties and formulas associated with 3 dimensional shapes so when they encounter the objects in the real world the connection is instant. I try to show students how they will use the concepts that seem as of they will never use while in high school. How many times have you painted, wallpapered, poured concrete? All of that involves the properties and formulas I am trying to teach my students!
