To be able to do this, children need books available to them in their homes. I have a first grade class full of students who are beginning readers, eager to learn, and excited about reading. Our school has been on the failing school list for a number of years. This is not due to a lack of hard work or commitment from the teachers and staff here at our school. We face many challenges due to the diverse population that we serve. A large portion of the students in our school come from low income families. A lot of the families are refugees that have been relocated and therefore many of the families do not speak English as their first language. There are also families that are from here, but are victims of generational poverty. Both of these types of families are often large families with little money for "extras" at home, and this includes books. We do have some parents that speak English, have good jobs, and can afford books but don't always know the best way to work with their child at home. My Project: If all children were able to take books and literacy activities home with them each night, it would empower parents to get involved in their child's education. It is my hopes that these bags would truly be family literacy bags. It would be an opportunity for not only the students in my class, but also the other children in the family to come together and interact with books and literacy games. In reality, the benefit of these literacy bags has the potential to reach many more children than just the students in my class. Something needs to change in order to see our student succeed. We need to get all families involved in the academic success of the students. By donating to this project, you will be helping to instill in students a love for reading and teaching families about forming healthy reading habits at home. hide» My students need 80+ books and 40 tote bags. details»
