My Students: Every morning, my fifth grade class meets on the rug to discuss the day, to share a question of the day, and to hear a story. On the rug, I have heard the shyest students look forward to sharing. It is an essential classroom tool and it is important that the students are comfortable on the rug.

My students are fifth graders, primarily English language learners, in California. They attend a public school. The majority of my class eat free or reduced lunch, and they do not have much. They are hard working and motivated. They love to come to the rug for community circle each day, and they love to hear stories and to share their own stories at the rug. This year's favorite read a loud at the rug was the poetry of Shel Silverstein. They laughed very hard!

It is important to develop English language skills with oral language practice. I often have small groups of students come to the rug to practice their oral language with each other. I also have small groups of students come to the rug to work with Coming to the rug for community circle is the way my class starts its day every day. We read stories, share our weekend adventures, discuss the day's schedule, and talk. We need a new rug to start the day off in a comfortable and spacious way for all the students. in math, to get a better conceptual idea of the lessons. A classroom rug space creates a comfortable and intimate space for the students to learn.

My Project: A new classroom rug will change my classroom significantly. Currently we have 2 rugs taped together to fit all the students, and this still leaves about 6 students sitting on the bare floor. While they love to come to the rug each morning, the carpets are too small, and in poor condition, as they have been used for the past 7 years. A new classroom rug would provide this ideal comfortable space for the class to meet on the same level, and to share their thoughts, questions, and stories, and to get the day off to a great start.

Dear Claire Giannini Fund,

Thank you so much for donating the wonderful new classroom rug to us. Our school year began already, and the students have been very patient and cooperative as they try to fit on our current rug. I look forward to the improved focus that a new spacious and comfortable rug will give these students. My students will benefit greatly during their morning community circle and literacy groups. We promise to treat our new rug respectfully and we look forward to the new comfort it brings us as we start each day. We appreciate your generosity.

With gratitude,
Mrs. F.
