My Students

Not much grows outside in this neighborhood; a GrowLab teaches children that there are many ways to get what you want/need without going to the store, and also where vegetables come from during the winter months.

I teach 3rd grade at a Math and Science elementary school located in a large metropolitan city in Illinois.

My students live in the community that surrounds the school; these are dynamic, inquisitive, energetic students that are constantly trying to answer the questions that begin with "how" and "why".

My Project

Being in a northern city, the majority of the growing season occurs while we are not in school. With an indoor GrowLab, we can plant in the fall and winter and watch the entire life cycle of plants without interruption. This indoor garden will provide an experience these city children have never had. They only see gardens and farms in books. In this concrete-locked neighborhood, our students do not get the opportunity to plunge their hands into rich, deep soil, or feel a sense of accomplishment at nourishing a plant to fruition. They must be taught that all living things have needs, and how to provide for those needs. A trip to a pumpkin patch or farm does not convey the same sense of horticulture as planting a pumpkin seed, watching the gourd grow, and carving it into a jack-o-lantern while saving the seeds to eat or plant again. Using the GrowLab will also provide protection for the plants from vandals and animals, which they wouldn't get if we planted outdoors.

My third grade students study the Life Cycle of Plants, a GrowLab will improve student learning by having them perform the steps to produce a flowering plant.

Instead of reading about it in a book, THEY will prepare the soil, THEY will plant the seeds, THEY will water and tend; best of all, THEY will watch the miracle of growth happen right before their eyes.
