Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My children participate in a yearlong unit in conservation and recycling. They’d like to take this passion a step further by converting to a paperless classroom. Our objective, with your help, is to change the face of our classroom by using computer technology, instead of paper, to enhance learning.

I love teaching fourth grade.

My 28 children, as well as the three other classrooms that will be sharing technology, live in a low-income community and attend public school. The profile of our student body reflects 65% minority students and 64% of the students qualifying for free and reduced lunch programs. These students follow the news and are concerned about their Earth's well-being. Recently, they decided to implement a recycling drive for waste paper, cell phones, ink cartridges, and cans. They have celebrated the Earth by picking up trash in the community and planting trees. They’d like to take this passion a step forward by converting to a paperless classroom.

My Project

I want my children to flourish into responsible citizens. My hope is that they will develop a passion for their environment by learning to eliminate waste, increase efficiency, and go a step beyond recycling. With school budget cuts, paper and Xerox copies are a luxury. We need access to current news and information that textbooks can’t provide. I see that a projector can allow my children real time access to the world. With your help, my students will study aspects of the environment, form an after school ecological club, and build a recycling web page to communicate with staff and peers. Instead of worksheets, students will input answers with live feeds and pod casts

This opportunity to reject standard wasteful ways will cut costs, promote nature awareness, and foster community pride.

It will allow students to be creative, learn technology communication, and master teamwork skills. This plan is important, because it will show my students alternatives to using consumables. This project will impact the community by engaging children and adults through continued environmental education. My children make a difference. Why wait for the future? Let’s do it now.
