My Students

Yes, academics are important but can children truly be successful academically if their personal and social needs are not being met? I do not believe so. Children need that extra support at school. They need to know that there is someone that is there for them that will give them a safe space.

Hello, I am the School Counselor at my elementary school.

My school is Title I with a diverse population with around 86% free and reduced lunch located in a large city. My school is very transient. Most of the students have been to 2 or 3 other schools before. We have a very high Hispanic and Latino population with many being brand new to the country.

My Project

As the School Counselor, part of my counseling program is to provide classroom guidance based on the needs of the students and teachers. Most of my classroom guidance is based around literacy. I love sharing a story on a specific topic and providing an activity to go a long with it. I have requested a variety of children's books that include topics such as character education, bullying, anger management, divorce, friendship, grief, conflict resolution, test taking strategies, and small group counseling activities. These resources will enhance my counseling program so I can better serve my students' needs and my school. They will also give my students more tools they need to be successful in life.

Do you remember what is was like going to school and feeling like there was no one there to support you or or who understood you?

Do you remember the days when you just couldn't focus in class because you were thinking about things that were going on at home or someone was bullying you at school and you didn't know how to handle it? My students are constantly worrying about things they shouldn't have to worry about. I want my students to come to school and enjoy it. Please help me enhance my counseling program!
