Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Football is generally a gender biased sport. By eliminating the contact and diluting the game into the basic skill of throwing, football becomes accessible to both males and females. No longer will girls stand on the sideline and watch as the boys play a rough sport. All will be challenged

On a weekly basis I am reminded by my male students that we do not participate in enough football.

I give them two reasons why I am not a proponent of football in physical education class. Primarily, football can be a dangerous sport. Most contact sports have a significant amount of risk, but football seems to be the most risky. We do not participate in unsafe activities. Secondarily, football tends to be a gender biased game. Of the students who ask me to participate in football in class, not one of them has been a girl. The boys who do ask say, "Let the girls stay on the sideline and be cheerleaders." That is an idea that I find unacceptable and I will not allow in my gymnasium. This grant allows for the most important skill in football, throwing the ball, to be practiced by boys and girls in a non contact activity. So the two reasons why I stated that we do not participate in football activities are debunked, and football can be reinstated into the physical education curriculum.

My Project

The game of P.T. Ball is simple. The garbage cans are lined up as targets. For each ball made into one of the cans, the team is awarded the points associated with the can. The cans have an ascended point value as the cans get farther away. So, the nearest can is the least valuable and the farthest the most valuable. The game is similar to Bozo Buckets, but on a much larger scale. This activity does not just target the psychomotor domain of physical education. Cognitive math skills are essential to the success of the game. The students are required to add all of the made shots in each round of competition. Then the students are required to add the score from each round to the running total. So each round is two math problems. The affective domain is also positively enhanced. Boys and girls will participate in a sport that is generally exclusive of females. This inclusion will give girls more self confidence and will generate a more cohesive classroom setting for both genders.

I chose two types of foam footballs, small and large.

The small footballs will be used primarily by the younger students, Kindergarten thru third grade. The larger ones will be utilized with the older students, fourth thru eighth grade. Along with the balls the cans are necessary as targets. The point amount on each can is arbitrary and may be any number. So, for the younger students I could make easy math problems with fives and tens. The older students can work on difficult math problems.
