Call It Courage - Attending to Annotations!

My students need 20 copies of "Call It Courage" so that they can learn to annotate (highlight vocabulary, underline passages relating to a theme) while reading.

My Students

In language arts we are continually sifting back though our reading material to work on comprehension and writing activities. We remind ourselves about character traits and aspects of the plot line to encourage solid comprehension and to note examples that might be used in essay writing.

Our middle school language arts class is taught in a small group setting to provide more specific, individualized instruction to support each student's learning.

Every student that I have worked with is a dedicated learner, and I am always on the lookout for new ideas and techniques to help facilitate their skill building.

My Project

I am requesting that each student have their own copy of Call It Courage, the novel that we will use to kickoff the school year. It allows for an interesting study of early Polynesian history and culture as the students return from their summer vacations.

Next year, I would like to encourage my students to become fully immersed in their reading by annotating directly in their books.

I believe that the novelty of annotating will be a welcome change to the graphic organizers as well as aiding in improving their comprehension.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
