Watch cartoons in school? Email quiz results to your teacher? Brain Pop enables students to do both of these activities and more, while learning important scientific concepts. Tim and Moby use short animations and Multiple Choice quizzes to master key scientific standards in a kid-friendly fun way!
My students are typical middle school students.
They enjoy learning about new things, asking questions, and learning! They are also incredibly technologically literate, love going to the computer lab and many also use technology at home. Their attention is drawn to video and multimedia activities in which they can actively participate, either individually or in groups. Brain Pop is a valuable tool that engages and provides a variety of activities to introduce and review scientific concepts I teach, and students actively participate. We watch a video short on a concept, featuring Tim and Moby, then answer questions. We compete to see who gets the most right! Then there are other activities associated with the video we can choose to do. Brain Pop sparks topical discussions and engages in an incredibly effective way! Tim and Moby (Brain Pop's cartoon characters) provide "kid-friendly" information on every science standard I cover, and NEVER FAIL TO ENGAGE MY STUDENTS!
My Project
Brain Pop is a multimedia based technology to which I can subscribe, that is delivered on demand to internet capable computers on a school campus. It can be used in a group setting using a single computer in the classroom with a projector or TV, or in a computer lab for individual assignments. I have used Brain Pop for the past two years (through grant funding) in both the lab and classroom on many occasions, and it has greatly increased the engagement and learning of ALL OF MY STUDENTS, whether they were GATE, struggling learners, Learning Center, or intervention students. Brain Pop is aligned with the California State Standards for Science, and as such studies have shown Brain Pop to be effective in improving student scores on end of the year tests! My students look forward to activities using Brain Pop and often explore the site to find out more about areas in which they are interested, even when not required. Brain Pop really drives the standards home in a fun way.
Because of current budget problems in our state, there is no funding for "extras" no matter how wonderful they may be.
With this subscription my students will have access to Brain Pop both for assignments in class, and the computer lab. Studies conducted by SEG research on the effectiveness of Brain Pop have shown that students who used Brain Pop had greatly improved test scores. Over 90% of teachers who used Brain Pop in their classrooms felt that students attitudes about school and learning improved!
