I Hate Desks Student Work Stations

My students need a work desk and stool that allows them to sit, stand, or move during class.

My Students

Do you remember what it was like to sit for hours in typical class desks...not allowed to stand or move? How many of us struggled to sit still, focusing all our attention on trying to get comfortable in those desks!

Children are built to move.

Their brains are wired to move. Yet, classrooms continued to be designed around the idea that children should sit still, face forward and not move for hours on end. As a middle school Special Education teacher, I have spent much time in regular classrooms trying to help my students with their classwork. I have been repeatedly frustrated to witness my students, and many non-EC students, try to maintain their attention while sitting, not being allowed to get out of their seats, swing their legs or sit sideways. Teachers have little patience for these students. They find their constant motion distracting to their classes and quickly judge these students to be discipline problems. I've had my own classroom for the last three years and have made it as "user friendly" for my students as possible. But I want to take my classroom to the next level, where each student has their own, independent work area and can feel free to move and feel free to learn.

My Project

You have a chance to change a student's attitude about school and about their ability to learn. Being able to give each student their own work station that is "learner friendly" would help my students learn more, learn it faster, and start a journey of success in school. I want to establish a classroom where they can focus their attention on the information, not on how they have to sit still. Corporations spend thousands of dollars to afford their employees workstations that will encourage the most productivity. I want to do the same for my kids. With your permission, I will attach a permanent label to each work station you sponsor. Pictures of the workstation in the classroom will also be sent to you so you can see the impact your donation will make. If you will Google "Associated Press Student Desks" you can view these desks and their impact in the classroom.

Most of my students have always struggled in school, experiencing few successes.

They see little hope of ever being able to catch up to their peers. I want to establish a learning environment that will turn this around. My goal is to have 20 of these desks. By sponsoring 1 of these desks, you will be making an investment in a student's future. The payback will grow exponentially. The child who uses your desk will begin to see hope for their future and make a positive impact in the world.
