Questing for Quantity: AP Literature for All

My students need multiple copies of 4 novels, including 16 copies of "Their Eyes Were Watching God".

My Students

According to author Roald Dahl, "If you're going to be anything, books are vital in life." However, in my upcoming AP Literature courses, it is these vital books that are missing. Due to the doubling of student numbers in the AP program, my students face a lack of the novels needed for success.

We have a diverse mix of students in our school.

The majority of our students come from low-income families, and this year we are really pushing our minority and low-income students to participate in the AP program. Many of my students have never had a family member go to college, much less take a college-level course while still in high school. Despite this, whenever I met with the students individually, they were all excited to have this opportunity and looking forwarded to being challenged academically. The students in our school have the desire to achieve, but unfortunately for many years the culture of the school placed more focus on athletics than academics. With a change in administration and an influx of new teachers such as myself, this trend is changing. School-wide measures now are being implemented to change the culture of the school and shift the focus in a dynamic way. This shift is evident in the massive increase of students signed up for the AP English program.

My Project

Having enough novels for our AP Literature course will allow the students a deeper integration of the reading into the class. Without enough novels for students to take home, we would be limited to reading the novels in class, a process which would eat away at our 50-minute class periods and deprive us of essential time for discussion and analysis of the works. In my opinion, one of the most important aspects of the AP program is the element of responsibility students develop as a result of at-home reading. Without this reading, the class loses much of its collegiate atmosphere. Access to a variety of rich, high-level literature will allow students to engage in true Advanced Placement work. With access to the novels, students will be better able to participate in creative and analytical projects and writings based off of their reading.

I firmly believe in the indispensable nature of novels in the English classroom.

An AP Literature course cannot fully function in its intended manner without availability of the required reading. Your donations will enable all my AP students to take full advantage of their opportunity to advance their education and attain college credit. This program can have an enormous impact on students who have never before had advanced educational opportunities and inspire them to become life-long learners.
