My Students

Most everyone has loved looking up at the night sky and seeing the moon and the stars. Unfortunately, school takes place during the daytime, so the next best way to study the starry sky and the moon is to use globes.

I teach seventh and eighth grade science.

I am an active amateur astronomer and love teaching astronomy to my kids. Our school is a high-needs, high poverty school. The town we are in is at a 72% poverty level. Our school system is under a tremendous budget crunch due to the economy, and the funds are not available for these materials.

My Project

Astronomy is best studied under the night sky. I host a "star party" each year for students and their families to come and view the night sky with telescopes. However, the star party is weather dependent. In the classroom I want my students to work in groups on labs learning the constellations, phases of the Moon, features on the Moon's surface, seasons, eclipses, etc. Many of these subjects cannot be taught adequately out of a textbook or on the Smart Board. These globes are a very effective learning tools. Using Celestial and Moon Globes will help my students meet the Florida Sunshine State Standards for science and astronomy. It will help prepare them for the Florida Comprehensive Achievement Test in Science. Most schools do not cover astronomy very in depth. I want to pass on to my students my passion this wonderfully exciting area of science.
