My Students

Foreign Language students today must demonstrate communicative and cultural competencies while applying 21st Century skills. My students deserve to have everything needed to accomplish learning objectives and their own personal goals in my Spanish class everyday.

The students with whom I'm fortunate enough to work everyday are high school students, ages 14-18, in Spanish levels 1 through 4.

My students are placed by level of Spanish, not by their ability levels. The student population of our school is divided into 2 extremes- the haves and the have-nots, social-economically speaking. They all participate in cooperate learning efforts, team-teaching one another and experiencing a variety of levels of success throughout the school year. My learners present information to one another in Spanish using manipulatives and visuals for facilitated comprehension. To be fair to all my students, I provide them with all the physical resources to present grammar or vocabulary to their classmates in their preferred way, as the school lacks the funds to provide poster board, markers, enough computers, etc. I encourage them to use technology as much as possible for their presentations by offering my one classroom computer at lunch and before and after school.

My Project

Currently, I have an overhead projector for the 1980's in my classroom, which has very expensive bulbs to be regularly replaced and making the use of technology for presenting to my students very limited. While working on my doctorate in education, I've learned and acquired a wide variety of instructional strategies and resources utilizing technology. The frustration is returning to my classroom to find a lack of 21st Century resources to facilitate teaching and learning. I have presentational programs provided by the textbook company that can only be played via computer as well as access to a large set of online resources to present the Spanish language and cultures to my students. I'm requesting your help to get a digital projector to connect to my classroom computer so that I may use all of these great resources in my daily lessons as well as allowing students to digitally present on multiple topics bi-weekly. Students will learn 21st Century, linguistic, and cultural skills.
