My Students

Reading is one of the most important skills if not the most important skill that a child needs to learn. Learning to read will lead to an appreciation of the written word. With improved reading skills come improved writing skills. I want to create a cozy area that promotes both reading and writing.

Welcome to my classroom!

I am a special education teacher working in a Title 1 School who loves teaching and my students. Teachers face many obstacles each day. One of the challenges I face is teaching in a portable classroom with little storage, minimal natural lighting, and limited space. I try my best to keep areas open, bright, and cheerful for hands-on learning, but space has become a big issue. Children with disabilities need designated areas that promote reading and writing. Desks take up a lot of space in a small portable so I would like to create a great reading and writing area that keeps space saving in mind.

My Project

I've tried to create a "light" atmosphere in my portable by painting a mural around our tiny window - everyone says it appears to bring the outdoors inside. I painted with calm colors and a simple design to encourage my students to settle down in that area for quiet reading and writing time...there's only one the problem...I don't have a cozy carpet, writing journals, or a place to chart student progress. I need your help to secure a beautiful "nature" carpet that will add to that open outdoor feeling missing in our "tight space", my students need Reader's Response Journals to create written responses to their text experience, and a mobile stand to chart their progress. These items won't just promote reading and writing, they'll help save valuable space in my tiny classroom.
