New Kind of Books, New Kind of Readers!

My students need to learn to use recorded books! We would like to teach our students to use books in many different formats.

My Students

Recorded books not only are fun to listen to, but they can expose students to new stories and higher vocabulary than the books on their own reading level. Audio books would not only help our struggling readers, but would enrich all students' learning with rich vocabulary and well-read tales.

Our students love to read!

Our elementary students surpass all other schools in the 100 Book Challenge Reading Program, ranking #6 nationwide for number of hours read each year! Even though we are a small, urban school, with limited resources and lots of social problems, we set our goals high, and challenge the students to excel! We are further hindered by the fact that there is no public library within walking distance, and many of our students have no way of getting across town to the Main Library; consequently, our students rely on the school library for their reading material.

My Project

Reading for pleasure has changed dramatically in the last few years! People are reading digital books on portable devices, listening to books on tiny players, downloading books instead of visiting the Library. Our students will graduate into a world in which books can take many forms, and they need to learn about them now! With recorded books, we can share classic tales with our students, allow them to enjoy stories that are read by professionals, and teach them to listen for information. Playaways are individual recordings that can be borrowed just like a book, or used by teachers with a whole class. The recordings cannot be altered or erased, and they are easy for even youngsters to use. These would be an ideal way to introduce our students to the joys of audio books!

Our small budget will not allow us to buy much more than replacement books and essentials for the curriculum.

We need your help to expand our students' horizons, and to share the beauty and enjoyment of audio books with them. We want them to enjoy books and literature in all forms, as other students in more affluent schools can. Please help us expand our students' horizons with a small listening library!
