More Than Just a Dissection: The Pig Autopsy!

My students need 3 Carolina Forensic Dissection Kits.

My Students

Television shows like "CSI" have inspired a passion in my students to study Forensic Science. It is by popular demand that my students now have a Forensic Science class for the first time ever this fall. However, our class will be challenged without the supplies needed for lab activities.

I teach at an all-girls high school with a blossoming science program, and I am as excited as my students about the opportunity to have a Forensics class next year.

My high school students love hands-on laboratory activities, especially activities that challenge them, like dissections. Every year, my students ask hopefully, "Will we be able to do a dissection this year?" and, too often, the answer is no because of a lack of resources. As my school prepares our young women to enter the field of science, it becomes more and more important to make sure these students are as prepared as possible. It is my hope that my upper level science students would be able to have experiences with dissections before graduating from high school.

My Project

The pig autopsy combines the best of all possible worlds for my students. It gives them dissection experience, but not only that, it also gives them practical application of the forensics ideas we will study in class. For my students, this will be more than just a dissection--instead of just taking apart the preserved pig, students will also have to put the specimen back together again, just as a coroner or medical examiner would do when conducting an actual autopsy. Students will follow the same protocols an actual medical examiner would follow, from the Y-incision to suturing the pig back together at the conclusion of the "autopsy." With your generosity, my students will have the opportunity to learn first-hand what it is like to be a coroner or medical examiner, to become a real-life Dr. Robbins, and it will hopefully inspire some of these young women to continue on in the field of science.

With your help, our brand-new forensics science class will be a success and I will finally be able to answer "Yes!" when my students ask if we will be dissecting anything this year.
