Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

There are so many dreams we dream for our children. We hope for their success, their health and their happiness. For my students I dream these things. Another dream I have for my students is that they are able to engage in reading. For them to see themselves as readers and writers.

The majority of my student live in poverty.

They do not experience reading and writing outside of the doors of the school or without the materials the school has been able to offer them. They need to be immersed in authentic meaningful expereinces with literacy. They need to form identities as readers and writers and see genuine purposes for literacy. These students need a plethora of resources at school to make up for the resources they do not have at home. Because of limited funds in the school district these students need the community to partner with them in resources. This will send the message that the students' learning is valued. Also, my students are native Spanish speakers learning to read first in Spanish when combined with oral proficiency in English is the best predictor of success in English literacy for second language learners (Escamilla, 2007, p. 4). These students are acquiring two languages at once. They are becoming complex thinkers and users of language.

My Project

The resources I am hoping for are mostly books with a few other learning supplements. These will be used in a variety of ways backed by research based teaching practices. Students will read and explore books. They will combine their background knowledge with things they learned and become sophisticated learners. They will explore texts: questioning and inferring. They will respond to text in meaningful ways. These children will engage in conversations about texts in order to be supported to high-level thinking. The students will write about their reading. Children will also dissect words in the context of books to see how they work and notice language patterns. They will experience literacy by diving into it and exploring the literary world.
